GORDO

rufff sissy boy birthdayThis dog was going down but the shelter was closed (thank GOD) so they brought him to RUFFF! He was about 2 months old and had been hit by a car and the owner’s couldn’t afford to care for him, but didn’t want him to suffer. His leg was smashed and almost didn’t go back together. I had his leg fixed (Dr. Winn worked his usual magic) and he was in an apparatus for 7 weeks and crated in my living room. Although he has a slight limp, he runs and plays with the best of them and has a loving “sister”, also adopted from RUFFF and the best “parents” a dog could hope for!

DUTCH

Dutch BoyI received a frantic call from a friend about a young puppy who was going to be put down by the breeder. He was very scrawny and had a biting problem. He was 13 weeks old, and the breeder was taking him to be destroyed because he supposedly had hip dysplasia

My friend was distraught and asked for my help. I agreed to pick him up at 5:30 the next morning and take him to my vet for evaluation. The vet told me it was too early to correctly diagnose hip dysplasia, but to humor me she would x-ray him.

I hadn’t been gone from the animal hospital 20 minutes when she called to tell me the news. This little pup did not have hip dysplasia – but had a big problem. He was filled with ROCKS – about 1 1/2 pounds of them.

In a puppy who was only 6 1/4 pounds-at 13 weeks of age- this was a BIG problem! The Dr. told me of her plans and hoped to avoid surgery (which we did) and that he would have to stay there for awhile. I contacted my friend who told me that he was the runt and she wasn’t allowed to feed him separately, so he was forced to fight the bigger puppies for food. I guess he gave up and ate rocks to fill his little tummy! She also told me he had been hit from birth in an effort to make him into a guard/protection dog.

When he was able to come home, he only weighed 4.2 pounds and had very sparse and wiry hair. The Dr.s all said he had unfortunately gotten the low end of the gene pool and he would never be normal. His pancreas had ceased to function since he had almost no nutrition and at 17 weeks all his hair fell out. The Dr.s said he might never have much of a hair coat, but prescribed some nutrients and a pill he’d have to be on the rest of his life.

I babied this pup (who bit me daily, but slept in my arms every night!) and I’m here to tell you that this special boy, whom we named Dutch Boy (he’s a pure-bred Dutch Shepard) celebrated his 1st birthday on July 8th! He weighs over 50 pounds and has the most beautiful coat you ever saw. He still bites me, but only me. He’s very friendly with everyone else and loves to steal the hose while I’m filling the pools.

He is a true rescue and a huge success. His birthday picture-party hat in place – is attached! He also does NOT have hip dysplasia, but was going to be destroyed because the breeder couldn’t sell him for the $1500.00 he got for the other puppies!

My deep gratitude goes out to my friend, who took him from the breeder, all the veterinarians at Black Mountain Animal Hospital, and mostly to Dutch-who is a special boy full of determination! Ain’t he something!

BUTTONS

One of our many success stories. Buttons came here from a family that could no longer keep him due to losing their jobs and home. He was a true “couch potato” with them and lived to watch TV and eat with the kids on the couch. They were distraught at having to leave him behind, and though I didn’t really have room for him at the time, I made room. He was really unhappy for the first couple of months and we made it a point to spend extra time with him. He eventually got used to living outside and enjoyed the pool and romping with his run mate. He went to adoption a year and half later and has been the King of the Castle ever since. That was 2005 and he’s still the love of her life! He’s getting on in years (about 9 now) but is doing great as you can see!
